Love Knows No Distance: Dating Across the Miles
Throughout my last summer before college began in 2010, all of my girlfriends wanted to know one thing: "So you're gonna do the long distance? Are you sure? You have to ask him what it will be like. You have to have a plan!" Well… Nicholas and I left for college at the end of that summer and we didn't have one of those plans like my friends told me I needed. I was heading to Texas A&M University, and he was heading to the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Our plan was simply this: we had been brought into each other's lives for a reason, and 1,420 miles of distance wasn't going to change that. We've spent the following years continuing to make each other a part of our plans.
Being so far away for the majority of the year, with different schedules, different friends, and different lives is very hard to manage, but every difficult moment has been worth it. We've learned so much about each other and about life in general. Being with Nicholas has taught me many important things: it's okay and important to schedule quality time (Skype dates and phone calls), it's vital to be honest and true to yourself and others all of the time, and that you can't learn to love if you are not fully invested in the opportunities in front of you. Nicholas is the most faithful, humble, and respectable man that I know. He is brave, he is goofy, he is passionate, he is very smart, he is gentle, and he is loving. I could go on for days about the many things that I love about him. But with all of these qualities, he teaches me everyday about sacrifice and love rooted in faith. We take each day one step at a time, discerning God's calling for each of us always. We don't know where the future will take us, but wherever we end up, I pray that both Nicholas and I are happy and healthy, and that we live our life for the Lord, our first love. |
