Forever Sisters: Kappa Theta Beta
There is an organization that has forever captured my heart, and it is called Kappa Theta Beta. Kappa Theta Beta (KTB) is the Catholic sorority at St. Mary's Catholic Center in College Station, Texas, and it is a sisterhood unlike any other. Kappa Theta Beta stands for the first letters of the Greek translation of "Catholic Daughters of the King," which is what this sisterhood is made of. I joined KTB my freshman year of college, looking for an organization to join that would feed me spiritually. Little did I know how starving I actually was.
I grew up as an only child, and the moment I pledged Kappa Theta Beta, I joined a family of hundreds of sisters. KTB has helped me grow in three pillars: Service, Social, and Sisterhood, all the while leading me to closer to Christ and developing a better understanding of my Catholic faith. During my time in Kappa Theta Beta I have truly made my faith my own with the support of my sisters, who encourage me daily to live my faith for all to see. KTB has nourished me and helped me to become a woman of God, like our ultimate model of a Christian woman: Mary, the mother of Christ. I have had so many sisters who have taken care of me since I pledged Kappa Theta Beta in 2010. From pledge class members, my small group leaders, "Bigs," "Littles," and board members, each sister has truly touched my life in both big and little ways. During my sophomore year, I felt a deep calling to serve my sisters in a greater capacity. In the Spring of 2012, I began serving as a "Small Group Leader," ministering to a small group of KTB members on a weekly basis. My small group built me up and affirmed me in my abilities to reach girls on an individual level. It began a powerful prayer-life, as I intentionally began praying for others and their anxieties and joys that they shared with me in confidence. Also in the Spring of 2012, I felt the call to give even more of myself to my sisters. It was a hard decision at first, because I was choosing between giving back to two different organizations. Ultimately, after much prayer and discernment, I decided that if I was going to be involved, I would focus on one organization, and give all of my efforts to its cause. I applied to serve as Chaplain for Kappa Theta Beta, and it turns out that was exactly my calling. My mission as Chaplain, while spearheading the planning for the semester retreats and working alongside the Standards & Enrichment Chair to plan weekly meetings, was to make sure each girl was brought closer to each other and Christ through everything that we planned, and that each girl felt special and loved. I absolutely loved planning each Monday and the fun-filled weekends we spent together as sisters. Putting my own special touch on each part of the year was a gift that I will forever treasure. I made many sacrifices to serve as Chaplain, but every moment was worth it. Seeing the smiles of each of my sisters, sharing the laughs and the tears, serving as a confirmation sponsor for a dear sister, leading the girls in prayer every week: each of these moments are things that I will never forget from that year. At the end of my junior year I was honored to have been discerned as the President of Kappa Theta Beta for my senior year. It has been a lot of work, and is something that is always in my thoughts and always in my heart. I trust that God is going to continue to use me for BIG things. I have learned during my time in ministry that God does not call the equipped, but rather, He equips the called. I know that he is giving me the grace and the strength to advocate for my sisters during this exciting year. I vow every day to nourish my fellow board members, be a motherly presence for both our old and new pledge classes, and to pray everyday for the hearts of my sisters, both past, present, and future. I am excited each day to be serving my sisters in this way and I am incredibly blessed and humbled that God has entrusted this role to me. "But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry." 2 Timothy 4:5 |
